Healthy Choice’s Broccoli and Cheddar  Soup has the following ingredient label:

 

            Water, broccoli, skim milk, dehydrated potato,  Cheddar cheese,  less than 2%

modified food starch, wheat flour, sodium phosphate,  flavor,  sugar, heavy

cream, potassium chloride, color added,  salt potassium lactate, autolyzed yeast extract, carrageenan, soy bean oil,  chicken stock, disodium inosinate,  vegetable stock, spice

 

1.  The growth of sales of this product is declining and they want to introduce a new, but similar,  product to boost sales.   What would you do first in determining how to proceed?

 

 

2.  Marketing has said that they need a prototype product to test in 90 days.  They say that you can select from the following:

a.       Product in a retortable pouch

b.      Reduce calorie product

c.       Reduced cost

Thinking as a consumer, which would be most attractive?  Explain the basis of your answer.

 

Which would be most difficult to achieve in the time frame allowed?  Give basis

 

4.  A consumer survey suggests that one idea is to take out the chicken and put in ham – to make a line extension product.    “Broccoli, ham and Cheddar cheese”.  R& D is asked to assess the technical risk of  this approach – What is your opinion?  Why?

5.  A company making a range of confections  contacted you for advice as to whether on not they should develop a range of products that promote health.  How would you proceed to develop information that would provide a basis for them to make a decision as to whether or not to proceed?

 

6.  The company (in #4) decides to go ahead with a nutrition bar and marketing has said that they need a prototype product to test in 90 days.  They say that you can select from the following:

7.  Nestle produces a number of beverage products.  Two of these products are:

a.       Nesquik, a powered fruit flavor product to be added to milk to give a “cool     

      tropical flavor when added to milk

b.      Natural lemon flavored ice tea in a can ready to drink

 

How would you classify each of  these products in terms of:

·        Benefit to customer?

·        Booz Allen Newness map?

·        Product Classification maxtrix?

 

Sales of  both of these products are declining in market share, and marketing wants R & D to do something to regain market share.  How would you proceed and why?

 

8.   For what types of products is a stage gate process appropriate? Do you thin that is ever inappropriated for use?  Why?

 

9.   As the R&R leader for your new products being developed, what contribution to the an analysis of financial attractiveness might you make?
