Text Box: The effect of different % loadings of nanocomposite materials on properties of nylon 6 films
Text Box: Ahmad Allafi and Dr. Pascall
Text Box: Nylon 6 organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by melt processing using a twin screw extruder. Five different films were produced with five different % loadings (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%). The effects of % loadings on the permeability to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor were examined. Furthermore, the effect of montmorillonite clay on the glass transition temperature, crystallization temperature, and the morphology were investigated using Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) respectively. As a result of clay nanocomposites dispersion, films permeability to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor have an inverse relationship with % loadings. Furthermore, enhancements to glass transition and crystallization temperatures are observed with the addition of nanocomposites.
